Ile Bora Bora

Located 170 miles from Tahiti, Bora Bora is one of the oldest Society Islands (about 7 million years old. It's spectacular mountain peeks surrounded by an extensive lagoon is one of the most beautiful we've seen thus far. It's shades from turquoise to deep blue and its string of white sanded islets were well worth our visit.

Sailing between Raiatea and Bora Bora

It was great day for sailing when we left Raiatea along with our friends Steve and Hazel on the SV Oasis so we took the opportunity to take pictures of each other vessel under sail.

Baie de Povai

Our first week here we anchored in very deep water in the beautiful Baie de Povai. On my walk to town I passed this neat sign which shows directions and distances to major cities.

We kept very busy during our stay on Bora Bora, Kip & I (yes me too) went scuba diving with the guys from Bora Diving Center. It was my first experience at diving, unfortunately I did not get very deep this time but I intend to try it again someday.

We were sponsord as members of the OCC (Ocean Crushing Club) along with several other cruisers and had a great barbeque on the beach.

We biked the 18 miles around the island on Pee Wee Herman bikes (hard on the butt) and hiked to most of the view points. The views were breathtaking no matter what side of the island we were looking at. The blue lagoon which surrounds the island is spectacular. The coral heads in the shallow waters along the beaches have plenty of fish to see and the stingrays come very close to shore. We saw World War II canons which were built in 1907.

Throughout the month of July French Polynesia has the Hieva celebrations where dance competitions are held and groups from all over the islands come together in song and dance. We were fortunate enough to see a spectacular performance by the group O Marama which were last years winners.

I'm sad to say this is the end of our travels throughout French Polynesia. Other than being expensive we truly enjoyed it and have seen so many beautiful places it's hard to pick a favorite. I will work on a best of polynesia slide show and video on our way to the Cook Islands.

Many more pictures in Photo Gallery.
