Ile Tahiti

Tahiti is the largest of the Society Islands. I was formed by a double volcano which gave it the hour glass shape. Like most of the volcanic islands in the Pacific it to has the deep valleys and high peaks. Papeete is the main port and the administration center for French Polynesia. It is the largest city with a steady population growth coming from other islands.

Our first stop on the Island was Papeete. We pulled into the harbor and tied stern to at Le Rundel along the Boulevard Pomare close to city center. We were instantly back into the hustle and bustle of a big city and were thrilled to be there. All the shopping was within walking distance and we could get on and off the boat whenever we pleased. We enjoyed a couple free concerts held close by at the HuaKa'i i. The dancing and music was spectacular.

Med mooring in Marina Taina

After two days of the the noise of heavy traffic it was time to move on. As I pulled up the anchor I noticed it was caught on an old chain, luckily Gerard and Sue were with us and with their help we got it freed up. Med mooring, famous from the Mediterranean is not something we are used to, the bow anchor is dropped while backing into the dock, two stern lines are tied to the dock and a diver ties a long line to a ball at the bottom of the ocean.

We had to use a plank to get on and off Adelia. I must admit I don't do planks very well. We stayed at the Marina for a week, got Adelia all cleaned up and enjoyed a couple of dock parties with some friends.

Crystal clear water

We like being in a marina but we love being in an anchorage especially when the water is so clear you can see the fish and the bottom of the ocean from the deck.

My new Kayak
We finely pulled our new kayak which we brought with us from California. It's a two man and handles extremely well with one or two persons in it. It's the first kayak I've use that does not tip when you get or out of it in when your in the water.

We took a tour of Tahiti's interior along with fourteen other boaters on the Tahiti Safari Expedition. Beyond the beaches from sea level to 4800 ft. we saw the breathtaking views of the west side and the island of Moorea across the channel. We enjoyed a hidden world of lakes, high cliffs, lush valleys and waterfall and were treated to a wonderful lunch at the Moroto Hotel located at the top of a mountain.

Tahiti tour group

We spent a month in Tahiti, fixed the generator, redid the front page of the web site with David on the SV Pinta help. With the help from Polynesia Yacht Services we were able to get the generator parts fixed and our clearing in and out papers done with no hassle.

Crossing the finish line

Ready to leave Tahiti to Moorea, we decided to enter the Tahiti Tourisme Cup 2007. We were joined by Steve a local tug boat captain and his nephew Merik along with Brad from Special Blend. Our start was slow

but we managed to pick up the pace and pass all the other boats except two. Brads mom was on the SV Priscilla which was ahead so he was sure tickled when we passed them. Our local guys commented on how they were lucky to get on a beautiful boat like Adelia and they also were thrilled to get third place. Unfortunately they had to catch the last fairy back to Tahiti and missed the awards presentation.
